Max Manus (DVD)

This movie is based Max Manus DVD on a true story about one of the heroes of the Norwegian resistance movement during WWII, a man named Max Manus. He was one of the most brilliant saboteurs during World War II. This is about his battles against the Nazis and his own inner demons. The interpretation is based on interviews with people who survived the war and is very realistic. This is a fantastic movie about a chapter of the history of WWII that we rarely hear about.

The film revolves around Max Manus as one of the central heroes of the young Norwegian resistance during the World War II. Together with Gunnar Kjakan Sønsteby, Gregers Gram and the other brave youngsters not willing to see the free Norway become a part of the German Nazi empire The Third Reich, he fought a tough battle against superior forces.

Max Manus DVDAfter the fun flick "Bandidas" no one expected Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg to be able to do such a correct and true told story of one the Norwegian resistance heroes. But they have managed to make a great film, without messing up in any way.

We get the feeling that the heroism was not just a one-sided thing. For every action the resistance made, more civilians had to die. Max Manus, brilliantly played by Aksel Hennie, was an adventurer, and very lucky to be one of the survivors, more than once thanks to the cold-minded Gunnar Kjakan Sønsteby, warning him about the reality of it all.

The film also shows the psychological effects on the adventurer, who got to be a heavy drinker during the war, and after. Being a hero is just a part of the whole story.

A strong part of this film is the human relations. The boyish ways and friendships. The love-story is beautifully made. One can really relate to the people in this movie. That's good acting as well! I expected a lot when I sat down to watch this movie, as it had received very good reviews in Norway, and I was not disappointed - it is very exciting and full of suspense and overall well made.

A solid mark is given for true storytelling of brave young spirits, making Norway what the country is today. (See also Flame and Citron for a very exciting movie about two heroes in the Danish resistance.)

Troubled Water - DVD

Troubled Water is a wonderful, Troubled Water - Norwegian movie DVDextremely intense Norwegian drama. The main character, Jan Thomas Hansen, is released from prison after serving time for the murder of a child. He has always maintained his innocence and is ready to put the past behind him. An extraordinarily gifted organist, he takes a job at an Oslo church under his middle name, Thomas.

His obvious talent and gentle manner quickly earn him the respect of his superiors, as well as the love of the pastor, Anna. Thomas even overcomes his initial panic to return the affection of Anna's young son, Jens, despite the fact that the events leading to his imprisonment still haunt him. Then his past catches up with him when Agnes, a local teacher, comes to the church on a school visit and recognizes the organist as Jan, the young man who was convicted for the murder of her son. Agnes, in Troubled Water

Seeing Jan reopens the wounds in Agnes' heart. Soon all of her memories of the events surrounding the death of her child come back in a rush of emotion and despair. She still does not know what really happened to her son. Quickly she becomes obsessed, especially when she sees Jan spending time with a young boy.

Troubled Water tells a tale of crime, punishment, pain, suffering, guilt and forgiveness in a subdued but very powerful way. It is quite spellbinding, quite sad. Troubled Water is an intelligent, excellently made movie that I strongly recommend. It is one of the best films I have ever seen.

I Am Dina (DVD)

I Am Dina (DVD)I Am Dina, based on Norwegian writer Herbjorg Wassmo's brilliant novel Dina's Book, is a haunting, breathtaking and engaging story about a young girl in Northern Norway during the 1860s who killed her mother in a accident when she was five years old. Her father (Bjorn Floberg) blamed her for his wife's death, and she was denied the love of her father and sent away. She became a willful, strong, stunningly beautiful girl who behaved like a tomboy. She lived her life more of less by her own rules since the age of 5.

Maria Bonnevie - DinaWhen Dina (Maria Bonnevie) was fifteen she was married away to a rich friend of her father - Jacob (Gerard Depardieu) who was carried away by her extraordinary beauty. He brings her with him to his little "kingdom" - Reinsnes.

Dina quickly proved to be too much for the ageing Jacob. He taught her about sex, but she quickly started to want more of it than he could give. And she would stay up at all hours and play her cello and deprive him of his sleep. Dina seemingly is strong, independent and fierce. However, she is also a young woman haunted by deamons.

Gerard DapardieuThe scenography in this movie is outstanding. Visually as well as in terms of content, the movie is explosive and mesmerizing, visually spectacular, highly disturbing and set against a soundtrack of enchanting music.

Maria Bonnevie delivers a haunting and unnerving performance in the role of Dina. It may well be her best performance ever. Her tormented, otherworldly countenance is both frightening, beautiful and erotic, and the camera makes good use of her features with continual close-ups of her expressive face. Also, Bjorn Floberg (Dina's father) and Mads Mikkelsen (Niels) are great, and Gerard Depardieu is excellent as Jacob.

I Am Dina is an interesting, remarkable and unique film, an epic, and a movie you will love if you are a fan of movies such as Babette's Feast, The Piano and My Life as a Dog. It's a captivating piece of cinema! I greatly enjoyed it.
