Maria Wern: Episodes 1-3 (2011)

Maria Wern 1-3The Maria Wern series consists of 7 feature-length episodes (each about 90 minutes) based on the novels by best-selling Swedish crime fiction author Anna Jansson and starring acclaimed Swedish actress Eva Röse as Police Inspector Maria Wern. The series takes place on the idyllic and picturesque Swedish island of Gotland. We follow the likable and smart PI both at work and in her daily life as a widowed mother of two children.

Maria struggles to sustain her female perspective and approach to life in a harsh and male-dominated environment. She constantly encounters rage, death and evil but she stays determined to endure what sometimes feels like an unwinnable battle.

You may want to have a look at three other famous Swedish series as well: the Kurt Wallander series, the Irene Huss series, and the Van Veeteren series.

Epsiode 1: THE SPEECHLESS GOD - The usually joyous Midsummer celebrations on the island of Gotland are shattered by two gruesome murders. The killings imitate crimes committed decades ago by a long-deceased killer. As Maria Wern and her colleagues race to solve the copycat murders, they find themselves drawn into a maze of ancient Norse beliefs.

Epsiode 2: ALL THE TRANQUIL DEAD - A lawyer driving through the Gotland countryside disappears without a trace. A mink farmer receives a death threat and a sadistic trap is set up on his premises. Maria becomes personally involved in the investigation and finds herself in more danger than she thought possible.

Epsiode 3: DREAMS FROM SNOW - It's Christmastime when Gotland is struck by unspeakable tragedy - a high-school girl is found dead in the middle of a country road wearing a white Lucia gown. What appears to be suicide becomes more sinister when Maria and her colleagues find e-mails indicating that the high school is a hotbed of conflict, rivalry and extortion.

This is an excellent series with good story lines, great actors and wonderful scenography. Eva Rose plays very well, and portrays Maria Wern in an intelligent and sensitive fashion. She feels very authentic as a character. I consider the Maria Wern series as a powerful and suspenseful series and strongløy recommend it.

Maria Wern: Episodes 4-7

Maria Wern 4-7These four episodes too are full length (90 minutes) features.

Episode 4: MAY DEATH SLEEP - Two women, seemingly unconnected, die in apparent suicides. With no evidence for murder, Maria Wern and her colleagues at the Gotland police department find themselves looking for a stalker or considering psychosis in the victims. When more dead bodies show up, Maria's colleagues Ek and Erika are forced into the center stage.

Episode 5: BLACK BUTTERFLY - The charred body of a suffocated medium lies in the gutted remains of her office after a fire. When two other murders take place in the same manner, Maria Wern is forced to lead an investigation in which the motive and the connection between victims remains unclear. At the same time, her colleague Arvidsson's loyalty is forcibly put to the test.

Episode 6: BOY MISSING - A ten-year-old boy disappears from a dinner, while another vanishes from a refugee camp. Maria and her colleagues discover that beneath the island paradise of Gotland lie secrets more dangerous than they ever imagined.

Episode 7: NOT EVEN THE PAST - When Maria receives anonymous death threats, she's ordered off the island for her own protection. While her colleagues on Gotland scramble to find the culprit, it becomes increasingly clear that the murderer may have followed Maria. Now the seven women in her group are hovering in mortal danger.

This second set of episodes focus a little more on Maria's colleagues. They are an interesting and likable group of individuals, and this twist in my opinion adds to the richness of the series. Overall the second set of episodes are every bit as good as the first, with good acting, very good and interesting plots, and very evokative filming.
