Arn: Knight Templar [DVD]

This is a huge historical epic, Arn: Knight Templar (DVD)based on Jan Guillou's Crusades trilogy (The Road to Jerusalem, The Templar Knight, and Birth of the Kingdom). This historical fiction movie is set in the Middle Ages. The main character, Arn, is the knightly son of a Swedish nobleman in one of Sweden's foremost clans. For a sexual transgression in his youth - involving his love Cecilia and her sister - he has been sentenced to journey to the Holy Land and serve there as a Knight Templar for 20 years. Cecilia was banished to spend the rest of her days in a convent.

Arn Magnusson - Templar KnightThe voyage carries Arn through the heart of the medieval world and into the core of the brutal and bloody Crusades. He Cecilia must learn to fight to survive, to confront evil and overcome tremendous suffering and misery, guided by the faith that one day they will be reunited.

And then, finally Arn returns home to fight for his love and to unite Sweden into one kingdom.

This is a wonderful movie; an epic adventure that blends thrilling factual and fictional characters, and features brave knights, powerful queens and treacherous kings. It's a great tale of war, intrigue, friendship and betrayal. I loved it. It is very entertaining, and the filming and actors are very good as well. One of the best historical fiction movies from this time period around.

Evil [DVD, 2005, Region 1]

About the movie

Evil (Ondskan) is based on a partly autobiographical novel by one of Sweden's most Evil (Ondskan), DVD, Jan Guillou famous novelists, Jan Guillou. It is not a horror movie, but rather an intelligent and very interesting movie from Sweden.

Evil was nominated for an Oscar in the foreign language category in 2004. The film is directed by Mikael Håfström.

Evil tells the story of Eric Ponti, a troubled 16 year old in the 1950's, who is thrown out of his school for violent behavior and is sent to a Swedish boarding school to finish his degree. Eric's step-father is extremely abusive and aggressive, and strongly influences his behavior.

Evil - DVDWe follow Eric as he takes on his new environment and is exposed to a fraternity style hierarchy. The movie calls into question where "evil" behavior originates. What evil behavior is innate to the individual? What evil behavior is caused by years of perpetuation of social stigmas and miserable traditions based on classist hierarchies?

Andreas Wilson who plays the main character Eric Ponti gives an extremely memorable and believable performance. In fact, all the actors in this film are amazing. A great movie, highly recommended.
