Elling - DVD

Nominated for the 2002 best foreign film Oscar, director Petter Naess's adaptation of Ingvar Ambjornsen’s (Ambjørnsen) book Elling effectively combines offbeat comedy with poignant insight.

Discovered hiding in a Elling, DVD cupboard after the death of his mother, forty plus years old Elling (Per Christian Ellefsen) is taken in to an institution where he meets the dull-witted, sex focused yet volatile Sven Nordin. Two years later, they are judged fit to return to society and are installed in a flat in Oslo, Norway, where Nordin's interest is quickly diverted by a pregnant neighbor, Marit Pia Jacobsen, and Elling copes with his lonely confusion and fear of the world outside the front door by writing poetry, which he slips into sauerkraut packages at the local supermarket, and waits for the world to see him as the magnificent poet he is.

Elling is also a film that transcends the popular film industry stereotypes and portrays people with mental illness as fully functioning three dimensional people, with both emotional and intellectual motivations that are largely understandable as characters in a film.

Fully realized without a single patronizing moment, this is a warm, sympathetic and winningly perceptive portrait of life on the margins. And it handles the main characters and their problems with great maturity, kindness, and wit. A sweet and magical movie!

Mother's Elling ( Mors Elling ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2]

SYNOPSIS: Everyone who's seen the successful movie "Elling" (2000) probably remembers that Elling was a bit... attached to his late motherMother's Elling (DVD) (to put it mildly). "Mors Elling" is based on one of author Ingvar Ambjørnsen's books written before "Brødre i blodet" (the basis for "Elling"). It tells the story of Elling, living with his mom in downtown Oslo. She knows she won't be around for ever and in an effort to get him out in the world, and help him stand on his own two feet, she buys tickets for them both for a trip to sunny Spain! What follows is a series of mishaps as we tag along with Elling through situations he's never been in before. Riding on an airplane, on the beach surrounded with topless women, the Spanish nightlife, befriending the Norwegian woman in the neighbouring hotel-room, etc. It is at times funny but never as light-hearted as the original movie. Here there is more emphasis on the seriousness of Elling's condition, and we rarely find ourselves laughing like we did with the first movie.

Elling: Love Me Tomorrow ( Elsk meg i morgen ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2]

SYNOPSIS: Three years have passed since Elling moved to town together with Kjell Bjarne, his roommate from the institution at Brøynes. Elling now lives on his own in the Elling: Love me tomorrow DVDapartment. Kjell Bjarne has moved up one floor, to Reidun and her little daughter Mojo. Elling feels like an outsider, and he isolates himself more and more. He observes humankind with astonishment, and wonders at how everyone else seems to be adjusting so well. Finally, Kjell Bjarne takes care of the situation. Elling protests, but he is still pretty happy as he is transformed into a new man, clean, fully rested and well dressed. Deep inside, he also knows what's lacking, and one evening he finally finds the woman he knows is able to fill the void in his life. He's willing to do anything to win her trust and conquer her love. But when he is invited home to his new girlfriend for dinner, a few objections appear to Elling, and the story doesn't end quite the way he had thought it would.
