Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg (DVD)

This is a wonderful film, and in some ways epic. Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish businessman made into an attache to the Swedish Embassy moved to Budapest, Hungary in 1944 to help Jews escape Adolph Eichmann's deadly path. Working under extremely difficult conditions, never taking no for an answer, and using whichever means were available to him, Wallenberg managed to save over 60,000 people in Budapest's Jewish ghetto. He did this, mainly, by helping them escape Hungary with Swedish papers (later referred to as "Wallenberg passports"), or getting them placed in protective housing.

His greatest challenge came in 1945, when he saved the lives of some 65,000 Jews in the ghetto by forcing the hand of the German general responsible for their fate.

Then, as the Soviets had "freed" Budapest, it seems Wallenberg's luck finally run out. On January 17, 1945, Wallenberg was taken to Moscow as a Soviet prisoner. He was never released, and his fate has remained a mystery.

The movie is starred by Swedish actor and international film star Stellan Skarsgård (Aberdeen, Dancer in the Dark, Good Will Hunting, Amistad, Breaking the Waves, The Hunt for Red October), who "is merely perfect" (New York Post) as Raoul Wallenberg.

Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg is a stunning as well as moving and sensitive portrait of internationally known hero, Raoul Wallenberg, a small-scale businessman whose life was transformed after he witnessed bodies being thrown from a train on its way to Auschwitz. Wallenberg was a heroic, caring, motivated man who did all he could to help many of the Jews of the Budapest ghetto. It is a movie that makes a strong impression. Quite an eye-opener. I enjoyed it very much, and I strongly recommend it!

Commander Hamilton - DVD

Commander Hamilton is a movie based on the series of books by Swedish writer Jan Guillou about Carl Hamilton - Coq Rouge (see also the Knight Templar). This series topped the bestseller lists in all the Scandinavian countries.

Commander Hamilton is an action-packed suspense thriller, starring Peter Stormare (Fargo, Nacho Libre) as the Swedish 007, Carl Hamilton. Together with his Finnish secret-service counterpart, Hamilton must find and disarm a smuggled nuclear weapon. The action ranges from Scandinavia to the steppes of Russia in the hunt for the bomb.

Mark Hamill (Star Wars) plays the American villain and the beautiful Swedish actress Lena Olin (Chocolat, Alias, The Unbearable Lightness of Being) plays Hamilton's love, Tessie. Peter Stormare does a good job as Carl Hamilton.
