Scandinavian crime fiction awards

Scandinavians are big on reading, and love crime fiction. As well, the Scandinavian countries have a number of awards and prizes for crime fiction books and authors (see also Scandinavian literary awards). To the best of our knowledge, Iceland is the only country that does not have such an award at this time. In the following, we list some of the most important prizes by country, along with the recipients of these prizes:

The Glass Key Award

The Glass Key award is a literature award given annually to a crime novel by an author from the Nordic countries. The award is named after the novel The Glass Key by Dashiell Hammett, and is a real glass key given every year by the members of the Crime Writers of Scandinavia to a crime novel written by a Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian or Swedish author.

Danish awards

Palle Rosenkrantz Prisen is a prize awarded annually for the best crime fiction novel published in Danish. The prize is awarded by the Danish Crime Academy (Det danske Kriminalakademi). The prize is named after Palle Rosenkrantz (1867-1941), who is viewed as the first Danish crime fiction author (Mordet i Vestermarie, published 1902).

Swedish crime fiction awards

Swedish Crime Writers' Academy (Svenska Deckarakademin) was set up in 1971 to promote Swedish crime fiction writing. The Academy awards two prizes each year:

  • The Martin Beck Award (named after the fictional detective created by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö)
  • The Best Swedish Crime Novel

In addition, they also award a number of other awards, such as best debut novel, on an irregular basis. The Martin Beck award is international - given to writers from all countries. Thus we have not listed the prize winners here.
