Norton 360: Another annoying piece of software

Symantec has good products. They do what they are supposed to do. And I have used several of their products over the years. But they annoy me. A lot. And the product that annoys me is Norton 360. It’s not that it’s not doing what it is supposed to do – giving me a firewall, keeping my PC virus free, and all of that.

What annoys me is several things. The first it that the program simply is not well-behaved. It steals a lot of computer resources for a long time during boot-up, and the whole machine almost grinds to a halt. And I see no reason for that. There simply is no reason why this program can not do its job after I have worked for a while, and do it when the CPU has lots of free resources. I want it to be there, and I want it to do its job, but I do not want it to prevent me from doing my job. I don’t want it to slow down my PC. It is as simpe as that. My guess is that you feel the same way.

Also, the program wants my attention all the time. It’s like a little child seeking attention. Small thingies popping up at the bottom right of my screen ever so often, telling me this or that thing that seemingly is highly important from the point of the program and its creators, but that I don’t want to be bugged with when I am working. I assume this is a little Symantec-thingie to build brand and product recognition. They may even thing it is smart. However, it doesn’t work that way for me. The program simply accumulates more and more points on my annoyance scale. And that is not good. And if that’s what happening to you as well, and to other millions of users out there, it is extremely not good.

How do you guys out there feel about this program? Are you pleased or annoyed? Are other security programs better? Any recommendations?
